Case Studies - Dansk BiblioteksCenter
Ebog.dk
leverages e-book stock
Background
In the
digital world aggregation is important and offers all
partisipants the benefits of economies of scale and scope.
This applies not just to English langauge markets but to
other markets too. In all markets people want to buy, rent
and borrow all content whatever the format.
Ebog.dk is
an aggregator owned by Dansk BiblioteksCenter (Danish
Library Centre) and some of the biggest book publishing
houses in Denmark. Ebog.dk has established itself as a
content aggregator building strong relationships with many
publishers, private and professional customers as well as
university libraries and public libraries.
Ebog.dk
was established after winning a tender issued by the Danish
Publishers Association for a digital store and library that
enabled e-books from many different publishers to be bought,
rented or borrowed.
Importantly Ebog.dk recognised the need to establish a
partnership with a trusted organisation that could manage a
project that was sensitive to time and cost without
compromising quality.
As VCIL
thoroughly understood the digital publishing business, and
the technical requirements of the project, Ebog.dk engaged
VCIL in early 2007 to develop three e-platforms to buy, rent
and borrow e-books.
Business Solution
VCIL designed and developed infrastructure to host e-books
in Adobe pdf format and iSilo as well as enabling users to
buy and rent e-books and a library lending solution based on
individual customer subscriptions.
VCIL
designed and developed an inclusive e-book store that would
include titles from many different publishers with very
different technical and editorial backgrounds. This enabled
any customer to search for a title, read a few pages, buy or
rent and download an e-book in any digitised format.
On top of
this VCIL provided an e-book loaning platform for users of
public libraries. Customers could borrow e-books for a week
with access to the file lapsing after that period.
The entire
e-platform solution is hosted by VCIL and it is also
providing on-going support and maintenance.
Approach
Ebog.dk and VCIL worked closely to establish the business
rules for the e-book store and relationship with public
libraries.
Following
the success of the e-book store, Ebog.dk and VCIL are now in
the process of enhancing the e-book store in
multi-languages, and integrating English speaking titles.
“Working
with Value Chain has been a pleasure. The development
process has been well managed, on time and on budget.
Response to corrections in testing has been swift and to the
point.
We have a
number of development projects still under way and Value
Chain is a good partner to work with as they bring to the
process not only technical expertise but also an
understanding of the business opportunities connected with
different solutions.
We
recommend our publishers use Value Chain for conversion of
books. The material comes from several different sources
including scanning from printed books. Here the quality of
the work is first rate and the prices are reasonable.”
Jesper Holm, Managing Director, Ebog.dk
Benefits
• Sales is developing since the e-book store was
established.
• Ebog.dk has the only platform for the rental of e-books in
the entire Nordic region.
• The library e-solution is unique in that it enables
integration with other library platforms, which means more
revenue from sales to other libraries in Denmark.
• As a result of the achievements of these e-platforms,
Ebog.dk has been able to successfully negotiate and sign
other e-book contracts.
